A Brief Guide To The Universe Text
The universe is the vast expanse of space and time that contains all matter, energy, galaxies, stars, planets, and the physical laws governing them.
The universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old. It was created in an event known as the Big Bang and has been expanding ever since.
The Big Bang is the scientific theory that describes the universe’s origin as a single, infinitely hot and dense point that expanded with unimaginable speed to form the basis of the entire cosmos.
This event set the stage for the creation of space, time, matter, and energy, leading to the formation of cosmic structures such as stars, and ultimately, life.
Galaxies are massive systems of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter bound by gravity, often spanning hundreds of thousands of light-years.
There are between 200 billion to two trillion galaxies in the observable universe, each of which contains an average of 100 million stars.
Earth is located in the galaxy known as the Milky Way.
Stars are formed when vast molecular clouds collapse under their own gravity, triggering nuclear fusion in their cores. Stars produce light and chemical elements.
At the centre of most galaxies is a black hole, a region in space in which gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape.
Black holes are formed when massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycle.
Throughout history, we have stared at the stars with wonder. Today, our understanding is deepened with the use of sophisticated space probes and space telescopes.
Voyager 1, a space probe launched by NASA in 1977, is now over 15 billion miles away from Earth. It is the farthest human-made object from the pale blue dot we call home.
